The majority of them got away, or were given help by the U.S. government, who helped relocate them, and employed them for counter-intelligence purposes. Klaus Barbie, "TheButcher of Lyon" was one of those animals that the CIC, precursor to the CIA protected. They paid him $1,700 a month as of 1948 when he was recruited. They even lyed to the French government who wanted to arrest him for his war crimes, claiming they knew nothing of his whereabouts. Yet they were the ones who got him to South America, and helped him bring his family over from Germany. They even let him travel back and forth from South America (Bolivia) to New Orleans and San Francisco as an agent, providing him with the alias of Klaus Altmann.
