Since the pandemic, a lot of people have broken the fast food habit. It is a product/service nobody really needs.
The effect of their union might not be what they desire or expect , but it is not necessarily bad for the world.
Gov. Newsom Signs Legislation to Unionize CA’s 556,000 Fast Food Workers
Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s legislative Democrats just gave a whopper of a gift to the SEIU labor union – Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 257 by Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-Los Angeles), to unionize the state’s 556,000 fast-food workers fast food workers.
To gin up the SEIU’s latest union-member recruitment, fast food workers have been protesting wages, hours and safety at the State Capitol.
California is about to become the first state in the country to unionize fast food employees by expanding state government to create a new Fast Food Council within the Department of Industrial Relations to set minimum health, safety and employment standards across the California fast food industry – even though every business in California operates under health, safety and employment standards set by state and local laws.
The state effectively making the fast food workers to be state employees.
They should definitely strike for higher pay right away. $100 an hour ought to do it. Heck, $200. It’s the land of social experiments, after all. This one ought to be hilarious.
There will be a lot more minorities and women unemployed due to this.
More unemployment, more blight, more reasons to move out of the once-great state of California.
BTW, the law affects more than fast food workers. As the prices rise and the (cough, cough) quality suffers, there will be fewer customers thus less biz for the food suppliers, and their suppliers. The inverse multiplier effects leading to more unemployment, lower tax collections, and more need for govt services.
FWIW, the Planning Commission in my town just approved another fast-food joint, this one a fried chicken place. Raising Cane’s, or something like that. Just fried chicken parts, toast, French fries, and I think lemonade. That’s all they sell. The drive-thru aisle has stacking for 23 (!!!) vehicles. Holy Crap! Their marketing plan hit a home run, as did the one used by a ‘coffee’ outlet in this region known as Dutch Bros. Wildly popular. They don’t promote their food or coffee, necessarily. They sell an image. That image is adopted by many of their very young and vacuous clientele as an essential part of their identity. “Brand Loyalty” for these kinds of places is phenomenal, and little unsettling.
The writing was on the wall in California, so the chains will get what they deserve, for not paying attention.
Que up the ChiCom made food-bots.
What will happen is so obvious to anyone with the least bit of common sense, yet they continue on thinking how great things will be when they stick it to these companies.
For a few dollars more you can sit down at a Mom & Pop place and eat fresh food off of real plates.
Long before Kalifornia was pushing a $15/hr minimum wage, I read about a hamburger machine that could produce 300 burgers an hour. This, combined with the order kiosk, eliminates humans. Kiosks never call in sick, or try to form a kiosk union.
Here is a cherished memory. Drive up A&W Fast Food, with the waitresses on roller skates. When we had enough money, dad would take mom and us seven kids to the A&W. With all the windows rolled down 3/4, the waitresses would hook the serving trays to the windows. I remember many, many Mama Burgers, Papa Burgers, and hundreds of delicious French fries, everywhere in the car.
They should speak to the laid-off Pizza Hut delivery workers. The true minimum wage is zero. And that is for a 24 hour work day.
80% of the remaining corporeal fast food workers are “people of color.” That 80% is a shrinking quantity as the corporeals are replaced by the metaloids and their AI bosses.
I’m a pharmacy technician who needs a state license and I barely scrape $20/hr.
Makes me sick.
The only people who make good money from unions are those who organize and run it. Who’s doing the organizing and running of this union? That’s where the money will go...
Probably won’t be able to fire them for spitting on your burger anymore.
RE: In California, over 80% of fast-food workers are people of color and two-thirds are women.
So if a corporation promotes strong diversity in hiring and promotion the reward is still “we are downtrodden victims of the American capitalist exploiters of the underclass and we’re going on strike.”
Not too exciting a reward.
Third world countries don’t have a lot of fast food places do they?
so you get a $4 raise and you get to pass that on through $4 union dues. We can’t trust you to spend for yourself.
As others have noted, of these 90% will be displaced by robots.
