CHICAGO — Shortly after the first of the year, the Chicago Police Department issued its annual “year in review” press release. Predictably, it was packed with good news—and only good news.
There was no mention of the year’s two headline-grabbing crime trends: a 23% increase in robberies and a 37% increase in motor vehicle thefts.
After boasting of “MORE THAN 12,000 WEAPONS RECOVERED,” the press release bragged, “DETECTIVES CLEAR HUNDREDS OF HOMICIDE CASES.”
“CPD detectives work diligently to hold violent offenders accountable and bring justice to victims and their families,” the press release said. “The Bureau of Detectives cleared 319 homicides this year, bringing the homicide clearance rate to 51.70%. – the highest since 2019.”
Now, regular readers know that your CWBChicago team is, uh, let’s say, skeptical when we hear the Chicago Police Department brag about something.
So, we filed a Freedom of Information Act request for all of the murder cases CPD cleared last year.

I can see why Chicago was selected as one of the top city for a romantic Valentine's Day evening. It came in number two (quite appropriate) losing out the top spot to Baltimore.

As of this morning, they claim its because they are under-funded and can't pay staff enough to retain staff. Of course they have had increased budgets in every one in the past ten years, when they were averaging 240 cases heard in criminal court.
It's the "Government only rewards failure" bureaucrats sticking it up our collective butts.
CHICAGO needs the big Mafia back less killings and small time hoods knew why.
Chicago and some of the other urban cities’ police departments are now the equivalent of just another gang. Turf wars are common between the Chicago PD and other gangs. If the other gangs stay on their own turf and do not cause too much trouble elsewhere, then the cops pretty much leave them alone.
For homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking the moment they are called.
For Chicago homicide detectives, the call goes to voicemail.
Any big city small businesses with an ounce of sense would go to the neighborhood gang and work out a protection deal. Anyone with two ounces of sense would get the F out.
Baltimore and Chicago for a romantic evening? Get mugged on the way into the restaurant. Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup and rats running up my legs. The car gets stolen while you were in the restaurant. To top off the evening, you get strangled to death by your new boy/girl/it friend.
Should’t there be about a 1 to 1 ratio between the number of murders and the number of murderers executed by the State? Sure, there will be some lag, but overall, the numbers should be close with exceptions due to murderers who kill multiple victims.
In the ones they cleared but could not charge because of the death of the suspect, the suspect was Al Capone. Dead suspects don’t talk especially when they died before the murder took place.
My town in a red state of course clears around 85%
Not a bad idea not many places left now with the invasion we have
