Why are Nevada Republicans voting twice this week? And does it matter? (primary tomorrow; caucus Thursday)

Republicans in Nevada, unlike in most other states, get to vote twice in the presidential nominating process — in a primary and in caucuses. Here’s an explanation of this confusing scenario, how it came to be, and what it means for the larger 2024 GOP contest.

The dueling contests

Nevada will hold its Republican presidential primary on Tuesday. Two days later, the state GOP will hold caucuses.

The Silver State has historically held caucuses, but after the 2020 Iowa debacle, its Legislature voted to hold a presidential primary in 2024. The state’s Republican Party sued in an attempt to overturn the change. Though the lawsuit was unsuccessful, the Nevada GOP was allowed to hold its own caucuses. The state party said that any candidate who took part in the Nevada primary could not participate in its caucuses.

What’s the difference between a primary and a caucus?

In a primary, voters typically cast ballots over multiple hours, days or weeks, either in person, through early-voting centers or drop boxes, or by mail. In Nevada, voters were all mailed ballots. Early voting ended Friday; voters can cast ballots in person Tuesday.

In the caucuses, voters assemble in person at an appointed time on one day, leading some to argue that such a process disenfranchises people who can’t attend such a gathering. The Nevada GOP is holding its in-person caucus at precincts around the state on Thursday from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Republican voters may participate in both the primary and the caucuses.

It'll be interesting to see how many people vote "none of the above" in tomorrow's primary as a vote against Haley McRomBush (since Trump is not on the ballot).

Trump will take the caucus on Thursday and ALL the Nevada delegates.

So the primary is really for entertainment purposed only.

If you consider use by the MSM entertainment purposes.

The MSM will use different results in the two to discredit the caucus. They want drop boxes and mail in ballots for their homeys.

FYI, my spies in Fulton County, Atlanta, say their election electronic systems are ALL “down”. May have to resort to paper mail-out voting. Anyone know what these catastrophic failures are?

Which system gets the state’s electoral votes/the marbles?

Caucus, IIRC.

Birdbrain didn’t sign up to be on the caucus ballot.

"Republican voters may participate in both the primary and the caucuses."

WRONG!!!

Republican voters may participate in both EITHER the primary and OR the caucuses, but not both!

“If you consider use by the MSM entertainment purposes.”

I meant entertainment for us. If Haley wins the primary and gets no delegates - entertaining. If Haley loses the primary to “none-of-the-above - entertaining.

We’ll see.

Either way. Trump leaves this week with Nevada’s delegates in his pocket.

“Republican voters may participate in both EITHER the primary and OR the caucuses, but not both!”

I thought that was odd too. Glad you clarified. I’m not familiar with Nevada processes.

I think the LA Slimes is deliberately muddying the waters.

God has a sense of humor, LA is being rewarded with a LOT of muddy water today...

NOT wrong!

We may participate in both the primary and the caucus. We marked our primary ballot “none of the above,” as suggested by our GOP governor (Lombardo), and must personally attend the caucus ( showing ID) to vote. ONLY the paper ballot at the caucus counts.

Hmmmm, news here in Reno has been saying you couldn't, nearly every newscast.

Ask the RGJ: Can Nevada Republicans vote in both the presidential primary and caucus? Says you are correct.

With the caveat that only the caucus counts.

Yep, embarrass Nevada week. And the stupid state Republican party wonders why they can’t get anyone elected here.

Which system gets the state’s electoral votes/the marbles?

>>>Primaries and caucuses determine delegates to the nomination conventions.

Electoral votes are decided in the General Election.

Tomorrow’s Nevada Primary is basically “a beauty contest,” where Birdbrain is on the ballot.

Trump has explained that delegates will only be allocated in Thursday’s Caucus

Doesn’t make much sense to me, Jane.

just hope not much more money will be wasted on the tomorrow’s primary and that very few bother to show up so Birdbrain doesn’t rack up her “beauty contest” votes.

Also, I certainly hope that the SC imbeciles who already voted for Brandon this past Saturday in the rat primary AREN’T allowed to come back again on the 24th and meddle on the GOP side by supporting Birdbrain.
