It was unreal that John McCain was in first place in 2008. Or Mitt Romney in 2012. One of the ways you know you are dealing with a rigged system.

I suspect the McCain vote was fair. We just had a lot of people enamored with him being a veteran, and one who survived the Hanoi Hilton at that, and not knowing what an open-borders knucklehead who could get us into nuclear war he was. Also, the Dumb-O-Crat crossover votes in open primaries didn’t help, either.
