In sports this is called an unforced error. They are avoidable.

You have a two tiered system of justice.
If Trump is not guilty of something, you want him to be quiet, and not confront accusations and the accuser, making him look guilty... especially since it would make him look bad for the general election.
But if it were anyone else who proclaimed they were innocent of something, you would want them to vocally defend themselves.
