Except tradition now, allows the Fedgov to command them like the US is at war instead of enforcing economic policy. The NG should be ONLY for protecting the Nation. That should never mean going to Afghanistan, Iraq, or Ukraine.
Except that Texas also has the Texas State Guard. They are not the Texas National Guard. The Texas State Guard answers to nobody but the governor. Also, there is the Texas Rangers, DPS, and about a dozen other militias around the state.
Also consider that Texas has the largest NG force of any state (including CA). And, they are all native Texans. How many of them do you think will obey the order to take up arms against their own state and brethren?
