In politics there’s BT and AT (before Trump and after Trump). Desantis is a BT candidate. Candidates like DeSantis wanted to pretend that Trump was an interesting diversion but that we needed to put power back into the hands of Establishment candidates like himself who would parrot MAGA talking points but leave the system as it is.

2016 was a surprise. Trump caught the DNC napping. They were arrogant. Hillary was overconfident. They did not have a pulse on America at that time.
