They ALL did...Wilkie Collins, Anthony Trollop, Thomas Hardy, Arthur Doyle, H. Rider Haggard ( whose books Churchill consumed when he was a school boy at Eton ), Lear's poetry for small children, Kate Greenaway, Beatrix Potter, LEWIS Carol,Charles Kingsley and on and on, and on and ON! The literary list, for children, tweens, teens, and adults is endless! I've hardly touched the extremely long list, that I could post. And these books were also VERY popular, her in America, through the mid 1950s!

And American authors were no slouches either...Edgar Rice Burroughs, L.Frank Baum,Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, and SO many others!

Grandparents and parents used to read good books to their kiddos/grands, but though some still do, it's WHAT they now read to them is problematic! The old standby classics often are completely ignored!

But you bet that I did NOT ignore these great books and have NEVER talked down to a child either...explaining what the unknown word means, and using good vocabulary words in everyday talking.

Arthur Conan Doyle...don’t know WHY the Conan disappeared in the original post, as I did write it.
