Ron DeSantis is seeking an 'off-ramp' from his 2024 campaign, according to reports, following a disappointing performance in Iowa - buoyed by the promise from Trump supporters to back him in 2028.
Speaking on Tuesday in South Carolina, DeSantis said that Trump voters in Iowa had told him they would support him in four years.
'They were coming up to me saying, "We want you in 2028, we love you, man," he said.
He told a similar story on NBC News.
Andrew Romeo, the DeSantis campaign's communications director, said DeSantis was in the race 'for the long haul,' through South Carolina and beyond.

That was totally true, for me, at one time before he backstabbed my President.
Now that I have come to know the REAL Ron... not so much.
It might come down to how fervently and faithfully he supports President Trump going forward. And the sooner he gets started on that, the better his odds.
Of course, he said he would support the GOP nom. (Something Mister Trump declined, IIRC)
1. Ron DeSantis started this campaign in 2024, with the only real competition being Donald Trump. I do respect the idea that DeSantis would be a better alternative than Nikki Haley if Trump is out for any reason in 2024, but that is the only way I support DeSantis in 2024.
2. Greg Abbott started shipping illegals out of Texas to the sanctuary cities. Now normal people in those places get a chance to see what happens in the real world when you flood your country with people who need to have somebody support them in order to have food and shelter. And having Abbott on the Republican ticket in 2028 can delay or prevent having Texas become its own country. USA needs to stay united, rather than have a secession or, God Forbid, a real CW II
If Greg Abbott runs in 2028, I am looking forward to seeing what else he can do. Only if Abbott disappoints, then DeSantis.
It appears to me in retrospect, and from a distance, that he was misled by anti-Trump faction into thinking he could derail Trump and take the nom for himself. AntiTrump donors ponied up millions, which would always be persuasive.
“Consultants” from the Bush camp beguiled him with glib but catastrophic advice. Maybe his own heart really wasn’t in it until malicious people convinced him that “this is your time.” Too bad but won’t be the first politician who believed in the wrong people and ended up in a ditch.
Um, no.
Career, it dead.
We had a once in a generation opportunity to rally behind an actual conservative with a long list of victories under his belt
And desantis has revealed himself to be
a liar
manipulative
corrupt
and swamp GOPe rino uniparted supported (until he started doing so bad, the uniparty bailed on him)
actions backed up by evidence.
They were coming up to me saying, “We want you in 2028, we love you, man,” he said.

The also had tears running down their faces.
IIRC, there was a phone conversation on J6 between DJT and Kevin McCarthy; KM was upset at the J6 protest.
"Maybe the protestors care more about the 2020 election than you do, Kevin", was DJT's response.
Who promised?
I have been reading his recent comments and trying to be objective about it.
I don’t think he understands the national Republican base at all.
His consultants are somewhat to blame—but he should have the intellectual curiosity to try to understand why his campaign has been failing.
I stick to my claim that the number one issue is “courage” this year.
I think he just totally missed it—and still does not get it.
He ruined himself - never trust him again
“If something catastrophic happens to Trump, either legal or health-wise, do we want Nikki Haley to be the only candidate remaining?”
No and hell no. But apparently, ‘some’ wanted all GOP candidates to withdraw (or never have bothered to enter the race at all) and fall down in fawning adoration and subservience to the Don. Never anticipating that “stuff happens” and our side could be doubly screwed re: that “something catastrophic” happening. I’d call that tunnel vision, but that would be ten steps up from what it actually is.
I didn’t promise SH*T, Governor Meatball.
Disloyal Ron was coerced by establishment Republicans to prevent a 2nd Trump term.
EFF him!
Sounds like he’s seen the light. I hope things go well for him in Florida.
RDS would be another W. The conservative movement in the GOP is a farce today. The rank and file voters are ignored by the globalist CEO’s, politicians and the many RINOs posing as conservatives in government, the media and the think tanks. DeSantis is one of them and it’s sad that some people still can’t see that to this day!
He should have been building a scaffold but he hastily made an on-ramp. Now he needs an off-ramp to save face. If he was the nominee I would vote for him over most Democrats just like I held my nose for Bushes and Dole and McCain and Romney. I had only bad and worse as choices. But if anyone runs against Desantis for the nomination I will vote for that person to keep Desantis from being the bad choice.
Oh please. Free Republic is just a blip in the world of politics. The vast majority of Republican voters figured out DeSantis on their own without us!
I always thought it was a mistake for DeSantis to run in 2024. He should have read the tea leaves and realized that Trump would be the nominee and he just should have remained governor of Florida and supported Trump full throttle. He would have been in a better position in 2028.
NÒOOOoooooooo.
