Governors of 15 U.S. states are putting politics ahead of the needs of hungry children by opting out of a new federal food assistance program that launches this year, critics say.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the remaining 35 states, four Native American tribes and all five U.S. territories have signed up for the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program, which will provide low-income families $40 a month for each child.

But Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont and Wyoming passed on the opportunity. Some described the program as a form of welfare and others claimed electronic benefit transfers, or EBTs, can be abused or squandered on unhealthy food.

Child nutrition advocates have been astonished by the disparagement of a program that will serve close to 21 million children and will supplement existing federal meals programs…

One is not like the others. But they do have a Republican governor. Can you guess which it is?

On the other hand, $40 a month does not seem sufficient to feed a child.

This is on top of all of the other snap benefits they are getting. You have to already be signed up for snap to get this $$$.

EXACTLY!

That IS the problem with depending on others.

I realize that nobody can be completely, 1005 self-sufficient. It is simply not possible in this world. But having the skills you need for basic survival and even just getting by makes it much easier.

Feed your own f’n kids. Stop procreating. Get a better job. Use a condom. Be a homo. So many choices.

Preach it!

Well, except for the be a homo part. Sorry. Can't agree to that.

But the concept of taking responsibility for your own kids that you have and likely wanted is absolutely basic. IOW, grown ups need to grow up.

Otherwise, feed your own kids

Where I live, we are told not to feed the ducks because they will become too lazy to look for food in their natural habitat and start waiting for people to feed them. This is what some of these types of programs do to people.

It’s like tying a baby elephant to a stake, and as it gets bigger and could easily escape, they don’t bother because they accept that the stake won’t let them escape.

I just looked at the 13 food assistance programs one of the Freepers provided a link for. If there are any hungry children around, it’s because the parents are not doing their job. They’re not going to be motivated to better themselves because, as you imply, they are trapped in this mentality of depending on the government.

I can’t imagine the rioting that will ensue if there is some major disaster which interrupts the flow of money to these people.

I’m sure they want to avoid some onerous hooks.
