Governors of 15 states opt out of summer food program for children

Governors of 15 U.S. states are putting politics ahead of the needs of hungry children by opting out of a new federal food assistance program that launches this year, critics say.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the remaining 35 states, four Native American tribes and all five U.S. territories have signed up for the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program, which will provide low-income families $40 a month for each child.

But Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont and Wyoming passed on the opportunity. Some described the program as a form of welfare and others claimed electronic benefit transfers, or EBTs, can be abused or squandered on unhealthy food.

Child nutrition advocates have been astonished by the disparagement of a program that will serve close to 21 million children and will supplement existing federal meals programs…

The dirty secret of the government and the agriculture lobby: Every food program the government has instituted has resulted in obesity. It is well documented but not publicized.

The kids get breakfast, lunch and take-home dinners for the family and get fat.

Good for them. It is the responsibility of the parents to feed their children. My parents fed me and I fed my children. Let the parents spend some of their drug and alcohol money for food for their children.

Amen to that. If you don’t want to feed them, don’t have them. I fed mine.

‘The bureaucrats will benefit far, far more than the people they purport to serve.’
So true. Try taking something away from the paper pushers.. see how they whale and accuse others.

On the one hand, there are any number of ways in which benefits can be misused.

On the other hand, $40 a month does not seem sufficient to feed a child.

And handouts are just plain wrong. They remove the incentive to better oneself and get a well-paying job. At the very least, anyone who is able-bodied should have to perform some kind of work in exchange for the handout.

These programs are 1% aid and 99% federal demands for compliance with a litany of unrelated federal programs.

School lunch programs have been this way since shortly after their creation—strong arms to force school districts to comply with all kinds of social engineering crapola.

About five years ago, some districts did the math and found out that the costs of compliance were *greater* than the money they got. Especially requirements to hire “woke” employees to indoctrinate the kids. The salary to pay such parasites costs as much as thousands of “free” meals.

“And handouts are just plain wrong.”

You’re looking at it from the point of view of human compassion, behavior, incentives, responses to those incentives, etc.

But, the objective is NOT to feed the needy. Nope, the objective pure & simple is to BUY DEMOCRAT VOTES.

I believe it was the same for Obamacare. The Feds started out paying the majority of the funds for a period of time, then the states had to start paying more and more of the cost until the states were responsible for the majority of the funds. Rick Scott was our governor at the time and I believe he opted out. IIRC

$40 equates to one happy meal per month per child.

In my misguided youth, I helped out in the Black Panther free breakfast program, which was used to indoctrinate black children. None of them looked hungry or underfed. Some looked quite overfed.

Deep State controls states through the budgets.

Don’t do what Deep State demand, find your federal aid yanked.

No state in the union has a plan in place for that eventuality.

There’s not a truly red state in the nation.

EBT benefits are aimed primarily on feeding the kids in the family. So why do families need an extra $40/mo/kid during the summer? Well, the kids don’t receive free school breakfasts and lunches during the summer (except that many do in fact get fed during the summer as well). School lunches aren’t subtracted from the basic EBT benefit and now the gov’t feels it necessary to add extra money in the summer.

You cannot expect parents to feed their kids apparently.
