A deadly Arctic blast will continue sweeping across the U.S. on Monday and linger through at least midweek, subjecting nearly 100 million Americans to weather warnings while prolonging a bitter cold that has killed four people already, including an Oregon woman who died when a fire spread from an open-flame stove after a tree fell on to her RV.
In the Dakotas and Montana, forecasters predict a wind chill of minus 70, which can cause frostbite almost instantly. Officials have implored members of the public to remain home. Similar temperatures will be felt from the Northern Rockies all the way to Kansas. In the northeast, blinding snow has brought the region to an almost standstill.
In Buffalo, New York where snowfall of 1 to 2 feet was forecast, severe conditions saw thundersnow - a bizarre phenomenon in which thunder and lightning occur during a snowstorm.
The weather system threatens to further disrupt daily life, including an NFL playoff game and the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest in Iowa.
In the Hawkeye State, the wind chill will leave temperatures feeling testing the hardiness of caucusgoers willing to brave the deep chill on Monday.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Buffalo native, posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing near-whiteout condition ahead of the Bills playoff clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
'Conditions right now in Orchard Park, where the game would have started moments ago,' she wrote early Sunday afternoon. 'No visibility and dangerously high winds.'

I thought the illegals were going to take care of this work.....
Sounds like a great name for a song.
Is there a Nobel Prize for the journalist who writes the most alarming weather stories?
Gonna get down to 21 in Pensacola Tuesday night.
Am I dead as yet???? Truly, this is the end of the world as we know it. On planet “reality” this is what is referred to as “winter”. These “journalists” need to get a life.
Buffalo = shitsville. The only way they are getting a new sports ball stadium for the local numbskulls, is NY state kicking in 800 million or so. Buffalo used to have industry that paid their way.
Toronto is 100 miles away and has property prices that are 5x of Buffalos
Well, it’s fun here in Idaho!
I don’t believe that I’ve seen it this cold since I’ve been here. Woke up to my chickens at 1.6°. Shoveled some, yesterday, but probably not enough. Now it will all be frozen in place.
Probably should have gone on the roof and gotten snow off the solar panels.
He’s such a drama queen.
Not according to Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac.
Time to panic and head for Hawaii.
One of the closest lightning strikes I ever happened to see was about 100 yards from me during a brief snow squall in SW Oregon, not far from Agness.
Thank goodness for Global Warming!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve seen lightning strikes that close, but during normal thunderstorm season. Wow, bet that was a surprise!
Buffalo Bills post ominous picture of a frigid Orchard Park as they plead for more fans to come and shovel snow for $20 an hour ahead of their playoff clash against the Steelers
I experienced thundersnow in Utah while at a ski resort. They shut down the lifts and sent everyone home.
It’s really not THAT uncommon.....just doesn’t get caught on video much.
Cantore is a drama queen.....he like to had an orgasm last year when a hotel deck collapsed in Florida during a hurricane.
He really beclowned himself on that one.
It was indeed. I’ve been that close to strikes at other times, but only when I was inside a structure or a vehicle.
A thunderstorm with snow. Generally speaking with thundersnow you see very high rates of snowfall per hour.
