They have traded their souls for power, which is what they all crave. Imagine their surprise when they reach their final destination and discover that it’s the one they sold their souls ‘to’ that has all the power over them... forever.
I am reminded of the ‘deal’ Satan attempted to make with Jesus. These fools actually fell for it.
