The Wild West was more tame than the name portrays. The wild portion came from the native fauna and the natives themselves.

Absolutely correct. Frontier folks who spent almost every waking hour tending their land, livestock, and families had no time or patience for ne’er do wells who show up in town raising h3ll. If the bad guys were lucky they would be given a choice - leave town on your horse or in a coffin but leave town you will. The unlucky ones were the original FA-FO folks that usually had their bloodlines terminated. Then it was back to work for the settlers.
