Not even close.
The last significant battle in Afghanistan was in 2010. Iraq, 2008. The bloodiest fighting in both conflicts happening during the GW Bush administration. Most of the troops involved in this fighting have either left the service already or are getting close to retirement.
The vast majority of today's U.S. military have never faced any hostile action. The most dangerous activity they partake in is commuting to and from work. Off duty motorcycle accidents are the number one killer of U.S. troops today.
This is why they have the luxury to complain about crappy food and staying in shape.
I think you missed the point.
As far as hard living, many GIs in certain units live very hard and dangerous days and nights even between wars.
I have family in the Army. Both Captains, both can't wait to get out. Their units are way under-strength but their missions/training is still set for full-strength units.
Ridiculous high tempo of long rotations are ruining the families of those who try to stay in.
Social media such as reddit and facebook are causing a lot of problems because the worst examples of leadership are exposed and shared across the force. On reddit/army you can read practically unlimited cases of dumbassery that good troops have to deal with.
