Unfortunately, the president of the United States is also Head of State, equivalent to what the monarch represents in Great Britain. So, POTUS represents the country—its history, standing in the world, traditions, its national identity, as well as he represents his party and his administration.

Trump has never gotten that part. The fact that he held the same office as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan apparently never registered with him. So, it doesn’t matter that he’s disgracing it and the American people with his sleazy antics. I voted for him twice but won’t again.

You are absolutely correct. Unlike most world leaders, the President of the United States is both chief executive and the head of state. There is a significant part of the office that should transcend partisan politics and requires a bare minimum of dignity and respect for the office.

And that holds true for former presidents as well.

MAGA may eat this crap up with a spoon, but try convincing middle class voters in traditionally Republican suburbs that this crass, clownish, classless behavior is just fine. It explains why Trump lost in 2020, and why he will probably lose again in 2024
