That’s why the 12 gauge is leaning against the wall next to the bed.
Ha, and that’s just in one room ;-)
Years ago someone asked convicted criminals what they were most afraid of: large barking dogs and the sound of someone racking a shotgun.
My dogs are the early warning system, the shotgun is the secondary warning system, the AR is the “Final Solution”. I will use it. I have no hesitation.
Just one more reason I have dogs. A Cane Corso, a Malinois, and a mini-schnauzer. My Cane is super chill…until she isn’t. And that’s a lot of dog when pissed. The Malinois is just also well trained, but he’s always super alert. If someone hangs around when the Cane barks, they are either foolish, or over-confident. Cause it thunders through the house.

They’ll just take it, along with everything else.
I suspect these gangs know when people are home and stay clear of those homes, although I could be wrong.
I used to do that with a shell in the chamber until my son educated me. Apparently shotguns (most?) aren't designed to handle being dropped and may accidentally discharge - even with the safety on.
Mine are now stored unchambered. The pistols are chambered however.
