You might be wondering why the crews of ships are not armed. Until the UN put a stop to it, ships traveled with arms and an armory. If the captain thought his ship was about to be boarded, he’d unlock the arms and hand them out and any boarders would either think better of it or be fed to the sharks. But dictators the world over thought that ships carrying arms would lead to the crews selling or having the arms stolen by revolutionaries and got the US to ban such arms. No ship with arms can sail into most, probably all ports. If such a restriction existed anywhere the ship was likely to travel it couldn’t put into port. What do you do with a locker full of arms when you approach a port where they are banned? Thus, if you want to protect your ship from pirates you need to board armed guards where you think the danger starts and then off-board them before you arrive. As time went on, the places you could potentially be boarded got more and more. The practice of hiring guards, getting them on and off as required got expensive and is, let’s face it, impractical. The only practical answer is the way everyone did it prior to the end of WWII, which is the captain had an arms locker and a key. This can’t happen as long as a single liberal still tries to control others who he (she/them/they) never met and will never meet.
These aren't Somalian skinnies in motorboats grabbing these ships, they're trained Yemeni special forces arriving in helicopters. Civilians with light arms are not going to deter them.
