“They need to vote in conservatives... “

It’s a weird situation. In order for them to vote in conservatives, a totally new conservative party would need to emerge, much like the AfD has in Germany or VOX has in Spain. In Ireland, traditionalist “conservative” politics have long been anathema, associated with an Anglo-Irish protestant gentry that was widely despised. For the last 80 years or so, Irish politics has pretty much lacked a “conservative” or “right wing” party. If it were the U.S., the political spectrum would basically run from bomb-throwing revolutionary Marixst on the far left (think “the squad”) with, say, corporate liberals like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden composing a center-left that is the de facto terminus of the spectrum.

Wow, thanks for the education on the current (and past) political situation in Ireland. It's worse than I thought.

Although my heritage is 100% Irish, I haven't really paid attention to their politics, pretty much assuming the situation is pretty hopeless.

Hope somehow a new leader like Geert Wilders or Nigel Farage emerges soon in Ireland to form that new conservative party.

SO glad my ancestors left Ireland and I was born an American!
