Anybody know why Crimea is “Russophone”?

Because Stalin ethnically cleansed it by deporting all the indigenous Tatars in 1944. Look it up.

I looked it up and it says that there were Russian-speaking slavs there since at least the 13th century and that Catherine the Great annexed Crimea in 1783, after decades of fighing wars in Crimea to stop the kidnap and slavery of millions of Slavs being taken by the Ottoman-controlled Khanate there.

And the Russians built from scratch cities like Odessa and Sevastopol. Of course, these also made great Black Sea Naval and trading ports.

I looked, and these same history books never mentioned the word "Ukraine" throughout those many centuries.

Weird. Maybe you can help explain it to me.

Crimea has been trying to detach itself from Country 404 ever since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, when former Republics were supposed to choose…..first trying to remain an autonomous republic, as it pretty much had been under the USSR…..then trying to form its own nation with an elected govt ….that was treacherously undermined by Ukrainian authorities.

Crimea has since continued to vote for referendums of autonomy and voted heavily almost exclusively for pro-Russian political reps in every election since.

Had Ukraine respected their autonomy, language, heritage, and cultural ties to Russia….as well as that of Donbas, as outlined by Minsk) all those territories would still be part of Ukraine…which however has proven it cannot exist as a multicultural country under the control of a nationalist supremacist regime.

Look it up.
