Can you really get disoriented and not know you are descending? I could see this if you are maintaining a level position and descending without tilting the sub down.

LOL...I was thinking of the coffee cup, too.

Nope, the sub was gently wafting its way to the bottom perfectly level. Either that or submariners have all given up coffee.
