A 5-year-old boy died after being stabbed by his twin brother during a fight Wednesday near Santa Cruz, officials said.
Deputies from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office arrived on a report of a stabbing at the 200 block of Tucker Road, in an unincorporated area in Scotts Valley near Highway 17. Officers on the scene discovered that a 5-year-old had stabbed his brother with a “small kitchen knife,” the sheriff’s office said in a Thursday statement.
When law enforcement arrived, they said they learned the twins had been fighting, “as siblings sometimes do,” the sheriff’s department said in the news release. The boy who was stabbed was transported to a hospital, where he died.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office called the stabbing a “tragedy” and said no charges would be filed in relation to the killing. According to California law, officials consider “age, criminal intent, and knowledge of wrongfulness,” when charging children with a crime, the department said. “Based on the current investigation, there is no indication of negligence or criminal activity by any other party,” they added.
