Hundreds of scientists working for the state of California to protect water supplies, respond to oil spills, study wildlife and track foodborne outbreaks marched in Sacramento today in what’s being called the first-ever strike by state civil servants.

Today was the first day of a three-day “Defiance for Science” rolling strike by more than 4,000 rank-and-file state scientists, who are seeking to close pay gaps with their counterparts in local, federal and other parts of state government.

I know nothing about the pay scales of these scientific related jobs.

But if there was such a huge disparity between the pay and benefits working for the State of California , and the pay and benefits available doing similar work elsewhere, why has this woman stayed with the state for 30 years?

Poor girl, making only $135K per year along with many paid holidays and a pension.

No, wait! The Dims told us for 50 years that women can abort their way to "equality". 67 million abortions later and they're still fussing about it.

FOUR THOUSAND "scientists" on the state payroll????

Fire all of them and how long would it take us to notice any difference in the way the state operates? 100 years? 200?

If it is such a lousy job and so underpaid, then it doesn’t speak very highly of the intelligence of those who stay doing that job, does it?

This tells me they have easy 9 to 5 jobs with no expectation of deliverables, slow-going without tough deadlines, high pay, high benefits, and lots of vacation. They get to play in their favorite sandboxes forever without anybody expecting anything out of them and they are impossible to fire.

Government sucks at every level.

If they are members of a union and striking — fire them all. No gov’mt employee should belong to a union that negotiates with the gov’mt. That is conflict of interest.

Treat it like RReagan treated the air traffic controllers. Fire ‘em all.

“No gov’mt employee should belong to a union that negotiates with the gov’mt”

And that is precisely what is wrong with teachers’ unions.

environmental scientist

The reason you're broke is due to the regulation promulgated by your "science".

....doubts she’ll be able to stay in California after she retires.

She should consider that a blessing.

It is hard to to have any sympathy for someone making $135K a year. She is likely to retire near 80% of her pay with health benefits. With a pension of $108K she can live like a queen in many areas of the US. In my fly over metro area I would only need $70K to live the life style of someone making $108K in the LA area. The article doesn’t mention if she is married. If so, what is the problem if the spouse has income?

That’s the irony of it.

If this woman was, say, a typical fisheries biologist, I might have a little sympathy. Except for that salary... Even in CA, one should be able to manage on that!
