You might want to ask Sir Arthur Travers Harris about that. His goal was literally to kill as many Germans as possible, as quickly as possible. (Curiously, he didn't choose "assault weapons" as his tool for doing so ...)

We certainly agree on that point. But that's the problem. "We" denazified Germany and seem to have de-imperialized Japan. Too bad nobody de-communized Russia. And de-islamizing Arabs is going to be a real problem.
