If the south wanted to preserve slavery all they had to do was stop fighting. They didn’t . It was about forming a new republic. Secession is the ultimate states right.

Well, you seem to acknowledge that the War of Northern Aggression is a false myth. Good for you! But, see, the problem is that the war was actually one of SOUTHERN aggression. In addition to the confederate STATES, the confederacy lay claim to more than half of the UNION that had NOT joined the confederacy, including Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky, West Virginia, New Mexico Territory, Colorado Territory, Arizona Territory (not the same as the later U.S. territory), Utah Territory, Nebraska Territory, Colorado Territory, Washington Territory, and Nevada Territory.

See, the South needed desperately to export their slaves. Lincoln’s notion of “dying on the vine” actually made economic sense. Farming had become too productive; a free man and his family could farm what used to require slaves. The solution was to send the slaves out to the West.
