He said the North did not fight it to end slavery. He did want to end slavery, but he wanted for it to “die on the vine”; he fought the war to preserve the Union.
On the other hand, the South absolutely did fight it to retain slavery, while saving their own necks, for they were terrified that black men, once liberated, would give them the fate that they justly deserved.
