Well, I wouldn't say that it's something that someone joins the military to do. In the past, it was always a volunteer assignment, the same as Drill Sergeant. Plus the norm is to have several months (to up to a year or so) advance notice before a change in assignment or entry to a school. The only time that I hadn't seen that norm observed was when a school had a sudden opening because someone withdrew or was unable to attend and they had to get the slot filled. Even then, they would usually look around for a volunteer to fill that slot before hammering some poor slob at the last minute.
All I can say is that I'm glad that I retired long before the Woke Mafia took over the military ... even a last-minute promotion offer wasn't enough to change my mind toward retirement ...
I thought the reason we provided lifelong benefits to service members was because they were ready to risk life and limb when required.
