Good thing he didn’t get the silencer or we wouldn’t have known about the shootings.

Hopefully Rick reported this before the shootings.

How exactly would a suppressor have enabled him to kill more people? As anybody who has been at a range and heard a gun with a suppressor could tell you, you can still distinctly hear them. They are anything but silent.

Something doesn’t add up. Suppressors are an NFA item. There is a lot more paperwork involved than just filling out paperwork at a store.

But of course he wasn’t on the FBI’s radar, oh no, of course not.

Pretty sure silencers/suppressors are still NFA covered items, meaning the approval process is painfully long. You can’t just walk in, fill out a form, and leave with your purchase in the same day (or even the same month).

This is a very poorly written article. It takes 8 months for the NFA paperwork and of course your $200.00 check for the tax stamp. Nobody is going to just walk away from that.

I’m embarrassed to admit I read the article. The gun shop picked up the disqualification on the 4473 before they even sent it in. Saved him $200. Also, having a friend still engaged in the process, it takes more than eight months now - lots more.

So, when applied correctly gun laws work.

At this moment, the shortest wait period the ATF lists for the processing of a Form 4 (paperwork for buying a suppressor) is an e-form filed online on behalf of an individual buyer (as opposed to buying for an NFA trust). That time is 201 days, ~6.7 months.

https://www.atf.gov/resource-center/current-processing-times

Suppressors for centerfire weapons generally have an SPL in the mid-130s dB range. 130 dB sis the SPL of a jackhammer, the siren on an ambulance, or he horn on a semi truck or an ocean liner.

Somehow I have an idea that Jorge made this whole story up, and didn’t even talk to any Maine gun Dealer, much less an NFA / Class 3 Dealer

Suppressors (silencers) require a fancy federal tax stamp and intense background checks. Getting that tax stamp takes a lot of time, it is not something you walk into a store and walk out with a suppressor. The story is BS on so many levels.

The shots fired out of a suppressor are really not that silent. If you are serious about reducing the noise you fire “subsonic” rounds, which are not all that powerful. Otherwise, the bullets exceed the speed of sound and create a “sonic boom” and the exist the rifle. That sonic boom can be readily heard as a sharp “crack.”

Most AR-clone rifles in .223 that fire subsonic rounds through a silencer will not cycle the gas recoil mechanism in an AR-style rifle, unless it is really well tuned. Even then, the bullet's “power” is often not much more than that of a 22 rimfire Long Rifle bullet.

So the statement that, “.....the bloodbath could have been much worse if Card had been able to buy the silencer because survivors would not have been alerted by the sound of the gunfire and failed to seek cover....” is at best a half-truth. It might have made the semi-automatic rifle a single shot with very little power, depending on the ammunition used.

As usual, the media does not know much about firearms.

So the gun stores follow the rules better than the state’s law enforcement and social services folks, who repeatedly dropped the ball here. It does sound like the natural guard also followed the rules. So the solution is NOT to further ban guns, but to ban government unions. Unionized government workers don’t give a d*mn and don’t fear being fired or any other consequences for scr*wing up because they know the union will protect them, rather than protect us.
