Government CAFE-like standards won't end with ICE vehicles. Expect future regulations that demand improving the energy efficiency of electric vehicles, as in removing weight (structural integrity), extending range per unit charge and reducing battery self discharge rates. They will tell you that if you cannot satisfy your transportation needs with the vehicles they allow to be sold, than you should relocate closer to your employment location and/or use public transportation.
