“A person I met long ago had the same experience when evacuating from Iran after the Shah fell.”
Sickening, makes one want to get a second passport just for that. Is it really THAT HARD to first evacuate everyone to safety and ONLY then for the government to go after them for money, if they were warned beforehand?
I mean, let’s be serious, the Federal Government has the IRS, for starters, that can collect money if an American put himself at risk after being warned. It’s not hard for them to get money, or force people to pay up, should they choose. But MANY AMERICANS get trapped through no fault of their own - should they be punished? In the US, I guess so.
“In a time when Americans in Israel are relying on their government for support and protection, the U.S. State Department’s Consular Affairs Crisis Management System (CACMS) has left many American citizens hanging in the wind, demanding them to sign promissory notes as a precondition for any assistance in evacuating from the crisis-hit region.”
