It’s an Arab tribal thing I think. Like in Lawrence of Arabia, the two outcast boys who kept following Lawrence around until he finally agreed to take them on as manservants. In tribal societies, that’s how you advance in status, by attaching yourself to someone of higher status, if you can’t actually achieve anything notable by yourself.
