You do have a point but I don't think the lack of firearm ownership is due to their regulations since almost anyone can get a permit if they wish.

I believe you are mistaken. It is very difficult to obtain a permit to own a gun. The person who wants one has to come up with an acceptable reason to own a gun. People are often turned down. For example, a resident of Jerusalem was turned down because Jerusalem was not deemed "dangerous enough" to require a permit.
