Trump would accept House speakership for a 'short period' while Republicans decide on a permanent replacement

Former President Trump told Fox News Digital that he would accept a short-term role as speaker of the House of Representatives to serve as a "unifier" for the Republican Party until lawmakers reach a decision on who should take on the post.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was removed as speaker of the House Tuesday after Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., introduced a measure against him known as a motion to vacate, accusing him of breaking promises he made to win the speaker's gavel in January.

"I have been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress," Trump told Fox News Digital. "If they don’t get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term, because I am running for president."

i see at least three paths for this to happen.

path 1. after several unsuccessful votes for an elected representative (eg jordan)

(”we need a unifier candidate that all republicans can agree to live with”)

path 2. after days of relentless pressure from democrats to get back to House business

(”the democrats made us do it”)

path 3. after electing a representative (or representatives) who then gets yanked for a trivial reason (or reasons)

(”i did not like the way our current speaker sneezed, so i filed a motion to vacate the Speaker seat”)

They’re already doing that. They’re going to do everything they can to destroy him no matter what he does.

The speaker the house must be an expert on parlientarty process and procedure. They must be detail people. Not Trump’s strong suit. He’s a big picture guy, not one to get b involved in the sausage making.

Then on to becoming Pope.

Both places need him.

Your correct. Because there are to many deepstate types embedded in Congress. However, if DeSantis were available, I’m sure the country club Republicans would support him. And from what I hear, he should be available right after the Iowa primary.

Look what happens when the Dems lay traps. Trump’s numbers go up and up. Let them lay all the traps they want.

the naysayers need to come up with a viable alternative. but who would be more acceptable to all republicans than trump? trump in this case does not need to be viewed as a winner candidate, just viewed as the least objectionable candidate.

i would be willing to imagine that all of the conventional speaker candidates have tarred themselves during the mccarthy speakership. in turn, that might cause the liberty caucus to balk. the argument would be that there is no need for a replacement who is just going to be a mccarthy-light.

not only did mccarthy bring the current situation on himself, but the republican majority also did so. so, it is upon the republican majority to initiate change away from mccarthy style “deals.” this is their golden opportunity to do just that.

I’d love to see him do it. And if he thinks it’s a good idea, then I’ll go with his judgement and instincts over the naysayers.

Democrats will lay traps for him at every opportunity to try and make him look bad.
......
that have been doing that from the even before trump was inaugurated in 2016—to this very day.

It might be argued that change is needed, a speaker who sees the big picture. And that there are always assistants who can advise on specific rule details. it is my impression that such advisors can often be spotted in formal house functions sitting close behind the representatives and whispering in their ears whenever a question about a rule pops up.

Electing Trump as Speaker would be a hardball move.

Agree.

Trump got to where he is in politics by challenging the conventional wisdom and proving that the “impossible” was nothing of the kind.

As I have mentioned before.
The only instance Gaetz’s ousting of McCarthy could be seen as a smart move, is if he in advance had secretly concocted a plan to get Trump as the new speaker. I would applaud such a move!

However, getting anyone else than Trump is ridiculous. All the potential other speakers of the House, all supported McCarthy anyway. So in such a case what would have been the point for starting of all this mess in the first place?

But! The Trump card can make all this disaster a great success.
Let’s hope for the best, and prepare for the worst if Trump doesnt get the position as Speaker of the House.

Interestingly enough, you only have to be an adult Catholic male to be elected Pope. No need to be a priest, a bishop, a cardinal, or anything like that.

Unfortunately for the Vatican, Trump self-identifies as a non-denominational Christian. So he’s not a Catholic. But, hey. Take a few lessons, and he’s in.
