If you’re kicking yourself for missing the historic moment of a House speaker’s ouster Tuesday because you had to work or get your kids from school, relax: We watched, and all it boiled down to was hot air — sound and fury, signifying nothing except cynical nihilism and likely weeks of chaotic paralysis.
Oh, Rep. Matt Gaetz and his fellow rebels talked plenty about high principle and the crisis of the Republic, but all they were really doing was burning down the House, or at least the House Republican majority.
Professed conservative hardliner Gaetz got the chaos he wanted, ironically thanks to the unanimous support of House Democrats, who joined the tiny GOP Suicide Squad...
Dems, of course, are reveling in the dysfunctional circus — and will presumably try to spin it out for as long as possible...
No one knows what comes next: The rebels have no candidate for speaker, let alone a plan for keeping the party’s most moderate members from turning to the Democrats in desperation for a return to regular order.
Gaetz and his allies didn’t take a bold stand for anything but self-indulgent nihilism — they were mad at how things have been going, so they blew everything up.
The reality remains that the Dems control the White House and the Senate, so the Republicans in Congress are unable to get much done, let alone realize the demands knocking about in Gaetz’s wildest dreams.
This arson no doubt feels good, like you’ve at last done something — just like punching a wall.
Then your hand starts to hurt and you realize that that’s all you’ve achieved...
Also up in the air: What Republican would even want the speaker’s job, so long as it means being held hostage by Gaetz and his crew?

“NOW WHAT?”
The Sun will still rise. Life will go on. A new Speaker will be elected.
Hopefully, the New Speaker will keep promises he makes to his own
Conference including getting back to Regular Order.
The bottom line is that we need a true opposition movement to oppose what’s happening and the Republicans ain’t it.
“Did McCarthy propose a temporary spending bill that would have cut spending, but had Gaetz and all of the democrats vote it down?”
Not that I know of. But the top line figure was still an increase. Somewhat reducing the increase is not a cut (but in Washington, they view it as so).
What they need to do is look at the revenue figure, go back to a year when spending was below that figure, and then say this is your budget figure for the year. You (such and such agency) functioned just fine with this much money just a few years ago so you’ll have to deal with it.
THAT is cutting spending. Slightly reducing the increase is not.
Yeah, but what kind of order. Let’s see, “what political party found Nietzsche particularly inspirational,” let me think for a minute
Wait, don’t you see this is now chaos, anarchy with a side of tyranny?
I think there were some messages sent yesterday. The louder the MSM howl, the more strongly I will believe this.
“What Republican would even want the speaker’s job, so long as it means being held hostage by Gaetz and his crew?”
No one wanted the job before. That’s why Ryan got the job twice.
[as an aside...I’ve always disliked men who look like they spend too much time in front of the mirror fixing their hair]
Tastes like...victory
Did McCarthy release the Jan 6 tapes to everyone?
Did McCarthy allow impeachment proceedings to move forward against Biden and his corrupt cronies?
Did McCarthy end Ukraine funding?
Did McCarthy use the power of the purse to force Biden to actually ENFORCE IMMIGRATION LAW?
No. And he broke his word in not doing the above. buh bye RINO.
“There sure is a high correlation between Ukraine and McCarthy support on FR.
Interesting…”
Noticed that did ya?
The Usual Suspects lining up behind the fake conservative. Or is he even faking it these days?
Never ending CR’s. Bloated Omnibus Bills. No Annual Fiscal Budgets.
No Ceiling on Debt Limit. Slow Walking Biden Impeachment, etc etc
Yeah… McCarthy’s “True Republican” Style.
Meaning Business As Usual in DC.
No Thx.
Yep. There is a clear pattern here.
“What they need to do is look at the revenue figure, go back to a year when spending was below that figure, and then say this is your budget figure for the year. “
Yeh ... just like the demonkkraps say we must reduce emissions back to 1993, or ... demonkkrap ESG run companies like Intel, Apple, Google running around about net zero emissions ... GOP should borrow those lines about reducing the feral givernment back to 1993 ... “net zero budgeting”. That aside, McCarthy lacked leadership in the end to keep his party together; he must have been banking on the demonkkraps to save him based on all the goodies they got out of the CR.
The Ukrainiacs are deeply saddened. They had their hopes tied to McCarthy for the backroom deals with their rat counterparts for more money for the DUmp that is The Ukraine. I just finished catching up on the overnight threads and watched as they swarmed. No money for The Ukraine means no money for youtube influencers on the interwebs. IOW's, this hits them right in their pocketbooks.
McCarthy proposed a temporary spending bill that would have cut spending but all the democrats voted against it including Gaetz and 20 other Republicans
It appeared evident even before the vote that the stopgap bill was bound to fail, as several hard-right Republicans had declared that they would not back a temporary spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, under any circumstances. And the measure — which would slash spending and impose severe immigration restrictions — never had a chance of preventing a shutdown, since it was regarded as a nonstarter in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
The size of the group of defectors was striking, reflecting both Mr. McCarthy’s weak hold on his conference and the influence of the far right in the House. The bill failed by a vote of 232-198, with 21 Republicans joining all Democrats to oppose it.
“Every time we vote for a continuing resolution, we make no changes in policy or spending,” said Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, who led the charge against Mr. McCarthy’s funding plan. “It’s a vote to continue the status quo.”
Don’t you think the Founding Fathers created just a little bit of chaos?
This sounds very much like the MSM defense of Crazy Liz.
The Left lost another one of their secret defenders.
“Gaetz and his allies didn’t take a bold stand for anything but self-indulgent nihilism — they were mad at how things have been going, so they blew everything up.”
Precisely, exactly wrong. McCarthy set the world on fire, and now people like the NY Post editorial staff spout the uniparty line.
““Every time we vote for a continuing resolution, we make no changes in policy or spending,” said Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, who led the charge against Mr. McCarthy’s funding plan. “It’s a vote to continue the status quo.””
He’s correct. There were no spending changes with the CR. And in November there wouldn’t have been any. And they would have passed another CR to December. And then there wouldn’t have been any changes. And they would’ve passed another CR to March and start all over again.
good point...
