I had to look it up but it appears that Ding Dongs came later by Hostess. Drake had Ring Dings way back in the 50's. I don't see when Ding Dongs or the previous names they went through Big Wheels, King Dons, King Dongs etc. was introduced but I'm guessing sometime in the 80s? Here's an article I came across comparing them and they are indeed two different products.

Likely I would prefer Ring Dings, unknown in the Midwest. Stay away from all that stuff in my old age, except for Entemann’s Mini Pound Cakes a few times a year with espresso.
