With just five days to go until the government shuts down without a spending deal, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is at a crossroads.
He can either shut down the government and possibly save his standing with the GOP hardliners threatening to oust him, or work with Democrats to pass a short-term spending bill and avert a government shutdown—potentially at the expense of his own speakership.
Caught in the middle of the California Republican's political calculus are including hundreds of thousands of federal workers millions of Americans who would be impacted by even a short government shutdown, and scores of everyday citizens.

The correct moniker is lazy ass government employees. They ARE the problem and they need to go one way or another. As for those “citizens” impacted by a shutdown, they can get jobs. Social Security and Medicare are not affected by a shutdown. So exactly who is really affected? Just grifters.
It’s never a winning issue politically.
shut it down!!!!!!
And, I didn't even know the govt. was shutdown. Didn't feel any effects of it.
And, IIRC, they are all made ‘whole’ once the ‘shutdown’ is resolved...
The only pain they feel is short term, which they should have already accounted for in their personal budgeting.
Using FedGov empolyee pain as a tool to force the GOPe to cave is a red herring argument, at best.
Of course, it is the GOPe, so...
You are woefully ignorant. Please look up election results after previous shutdowns.
No! We are 1/2 problem and the people we elect are the other half. Government workers are just the visible symptom. Too many of us believe in fairy tale economics and readily fall for the idea that there’s always a good reason to spend money. Never a good reason or cut or just not spend.
The government worker wouldn’t be there if we did fall for the political snake oil that created the program for them to ‘administer’.
As a result of conflicts between Democratic then-President Bill Clinton and the Republican Congress over funding for education, the environment, and public health in the 1996 federal budget, the United States federal government shut down twice——for 5 and 21 days, respectively.

<><>and from December 16, 1995, to January 6, 1996.
Republicans also threatened not to raise the debt ceiling.
The first shutdown occurred after Clinton vetoed the spending bill the Republican-controlled Congress sent him, as Clinton opposed the budget cuts favored by Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and other Republicans.
The first budget shutdown ended after Congress passed a temporary budget bill, but the government shut down again after Republicans and Democrats were unable to agree on a long-term budget bill.
The second shutdown ended with congressional Republicans accepting Clinton’s budget proposal. The first of the two shutdowns caused the furlough of about 800,000 workers, while the second caused about 284,000 workers to be furloughed.
Let Puzzle Place shut down but we should check off with Frank Luntz to see which way it will go.
Do you mean this Frank Luntz? One half of a faggot couple?
The government employees sent home get paid. So sick of this crap.
Don’t worry, Kevin McCarthy will bend over and take it good and hard like the Good GOPe Stooge that he is!!!!
Thanks to the enemymedia we always get blamed.
WTF... The always get the salary makeup check... always!!
FED works never lose $$! But WE THE PEOPLE do.
A shutdown shows Republican incompetence to get things done on time. To the cameras they only have pressers to discuss Hunter or Ukraine funding. The Speaker of the House promises but rarely delivers.
If he stood up to the Democrats and kept it shut until they caved it would be a winning issue, but Republicans always give up after a week or two and get nothing in return but deserved ridicule.
“During Ronald Reagan’s presidency, there were two government shutdowns. The first occurred from November 23 to November 25, 1981, and the second shutdown happened from October 3 to October 6, 1984. These shutdowns were relatively short compared to some more recent ones in U.S. history.”
Reagan had no problems being re-elected.
I sincerely hope McCarthy has problems getting re-elected
It’s just another compromise that shouldn’t be made. I never heard of anyone getting laid off in the private sector coming back to work and being paid for not working. It’s worse with scumbag government employees. They don’t work to begin with, at least not in the sense of working for the American taxpayers.
If anyone is curious as to why I demonize federal employees, it is actually for several thoughtful reasons. We need to steel ourselves for the day when a large portion of federal employees do lose their jobs, permanently. There will be sob stories and we do have some compassion. We cannot succumb to that compassion when it is necessary to fire them. Then there is the fact that federal employees are the deep state. And then by demonizing federal employees is an attempt to shame them into doing the right thing. That’s getting a real job in the private sector a building something that benefits Americans.
In a normal, sane, common sense world... this would be a no-brainer for McCarthy. Either get what the majority of reps in the House wants from the Democrats in the deal, or shut it down.
There is no “dilemma”. It’s just an illusion. And we’ve seen this show before. We know how it ends, don’t we.
