Oklahoma is set to execute an inmate Thursday morning for the 1996 slaying of a University of Oklahoma dance student, a case that went unsolved for years until DNA from the crime scene matched a man serving time for burglary.
Anthony Sanchez, 44, is scheduled to receive a three-drug injection at 10 a.m. CDT at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. He took the unusual step earlier this year of opting not to present a clemency application to the state’s Pardon and Parole Board, which many viewed as his last chance to have his life spared. His former attorneys blamed Sanchez’s decision on his spiritual adviser, the Rev. Jeff Hood, an anti-death penalty advocate who has befriended death row inmates across the country.
Sanchez’s new attorney, Eric Allen of Columbus, Ohio, has requested a stay of execution in federal court, claiming he needs more time to go through boxes of evidence in the case. So far, that request has been rejected by a federal judge and is pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sanchez was convicted of raping and murdering 21-year-old Juli Busken, an Arkansas native who had just completed her last semester when she was abducted on Dec. 20, 1996, from the parking lot of her Norman apartment complex. Her body was found that evening near a lake in far southeast Oklahoma City. She had been bound, raped and shot in the head. …

He’s set?
Yes, like gelatin.
Too bad, kid.
Root and branch.
They’ve had 25 years to go through the evidence.
Oh wow
I read through his spiritual advisor’s comments. He is still claiming to be innocent.
From what I understand of DNA testing, it should be able to eliminate his father beyond a reasonable doubt and establish that he was the one.
While I would never rule out rogue individuals within the state falsifying evidence, I think the solution is to make a capital crim of the falsification of evidence and cooperation with the falsification of evidence in the case of a capital crime.
I’d be more impressed if he had waived his appeal while showing contrition, but that’s because I am inclined to think that he is guilty. If he is truly innocent, God will reward him. Even if he is living a falsehood, he deserves commendation for getting the show on the road and I pray that he will (or did) receive and respond to the necessary grace at the hour of death.
Why is a guy who committed murder 25 years ago still alive?
“Why is a guy who committed murder 25 years ago still alive?”
The way I read it is that, although the murder happened in ‘96, the case was solved much more recently via DNA.
The case was not solved until Sanchez went to prison about 10 years later and under Oklahoma law he had to submit to a DNA test. It hit in the data base at that point. Also, because of issues with Oklahoma’s execution protocol, all executions were stayed by the state for several years. We are back on now. His day has arrived. As to his dad…many believe Sanchez kidnapped and raped Ms. Buskin…and his dad then helped get rid of her. But there was no evidence. But Anthony Sanchez was definitely responsible even if dad helped. He would never rat on his dad. But then dad recently died and so he tried to blame it all on dad.
SPJNK.
Same reason a man who raped/killed an 8-year-old girl in 1990. APPEALS, first state then Federal. 2 trials, in #1 judge read the wrong years jury instructions. That had to be appealed, trial #2 appeals are just starting, COVID put them off for 3 yrs to boot. DNA PROOF. More die in DR than are executed.

If you’re one of the bad guys, they’re coming for you.
Well said!
Guilty, no matter. Bad seed. Execute.
