Sure, I heard those same excuses with the invasion/annexation of Crimea in 2014. It was only the base Sevastopol, Putin wanted. Then he invaded Ukraine in 2022, trying to take the capitol, Kyiv.
Ukraine has not made many territorial gains in the last 6 mo, but it has inflicted more damage on Russias military than the Russians have inflicted on Ukrainian military. About three times as much, both in terms of men and equipment, according to most analyses I’ve seen. Russia is more than 3x the size though so I don’t know if it will be enough. Also, Russia is directing most of its attacks on civilians, so Ukraines losses need to take those civilian losses into account.

If that was a serious post then you should know the difference is that Ukraine has been improving over the years, and Russia has been getting worse.
In 2014/15 Ukraine was more corrupt than Russia but Ukraine is far less corrupt than Russia today.
In 2015 Russia was at 119 and Ukraine at 130
Today Russia is at 137 and Ukraine at 116.
So, we get it.
You believe it's okay for us to invade a foreign country with our CIA operatives and State Department because "the people want?"

The invasion of Ukraine was perpetrated by russia, it’s russian soldiers and tanks and artillery that’s killing innocent Ukrainian civilians.
It’s not CIA operatives committing genocide on Ukraine. But I’m sure trying to convince you of that is as fruitless is trying to persuade you that the Earth is round.
This isn’t the old USSR. It is Russia.
Which means different goals, but in combination they feel they have to push to the west in order to give themselves room to absorb the next FrancoGermans coming in.

It’s a huge difference. America is controlled by corrupt American oligarchs, which sucks, but we can tolerate it, because they’re “our” a-holes. When foreign a-holes take over, that’s when blood must flow.
Update on the conflict in Ukraine for September 18, 2023
- Ukrainian offensive operations remain stagnant along the line of contact with Russian counterattacks overturning what superficial progress they do make;
- The Western media citing US and other NATO member state officials admits Ukrainian forces lacked the proper training to conduct a successful offensive;
- As Western sources begin admitting to Ukraine's catastrophic losses in men and materiel, they also admit Russian losses are near all time lows;
- The collective West also acknowledges that the amount of ammunition and weapons Ukraine requires is beyond the West’s ability to provide both in the short and intermediate future;
- In order to provide such levels of material support, the West would need to significantly mobilize its population, industry, and military, a prospect that isn’t even being seriously considered let alone planned;
So, let me get this straight. It's okay for us -- but not for Putin. Here's a good example. I can cite many more.
We invaded Cuba in the 60s because they were getting too close to Russia (Bay of Pigs). And then a little later, when Cuba entered into an agreement to install Russian missiles, we sent out the US Navy to blockade that sovereign country, almost triggering WWIII. I served on board a submarine that was part of that effort (a few years after). So, I know it happened (not round world).
And so here we have Russia, who agreed to give up East Germany in the early 90s if the West agreed not to expand any further east. And then the West did precisely that and doubled the size of NATO. So much for that little promise!
And after doubling the size of NATO and placing missiles on the border with Russia, the West (US) planned to do the same with Ukraine. Subsequent to that, the West even made two more agreements with Russia to resolve the Ukrainian issue (Minsk Agreements) -- which the West promptly ignored. Two Western leaders within the last year admitted those agreements were nothing more than delay tactics. So much for promises!
And you deny that the US has not instigated regime change around the world and that they did not do the same in Ukraine in the Maidan -- where innocent civilians were shot by snipers as they protested.
Please don't insult our intelligence when it is well known that the US actively promotes regime change either covertly or directly (Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc.). And when our Assistant Secretary of State, along with US Senator John McCain, visited Ukraine during that time to support the overthrow of their government! So much for elections and democracy.
So if someone meddles in our internal affairs, it's a sin. But it's okay for us to do the same! Or its okay for us to invade a sovereign country like Cuba because they are getting too close to our adversary? So much for invading sovereign countries as long as we're doing the invading.
It sure sounds like a double standard to me! But you're too blind to see that is exactly what happened to Putin. He offered to negotiate before the invasion in 2023, but his offer was summarily dismissed without any discussion. So much for negotiations.
And then the Ukes and Russia were on the cusp of a settlement in the first few months of the SMO. That effort was turned upside down when the UK sent Boris Johnson to Kieve to stop that process dead in its tracks. So much for a peaceful settlement that would have saved hundreds of thousands of the lives that you make reference to.
