The United Nations is calling on the Taliban in Afghanistan to reform the way it treats prisoners, citing more than 1,600 human rights violations in a new report.
Over half of the violations were instances of torture or other degrading treatment, the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) report, released on Tuesday, said.
“The personal accounts of beatings, electric shocks, water torture, and numerous other forms of cruel and degrading treatment, along with threats made against individuals and their families, are harrowing. Torture is forbidden in all circumstances,” U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said.
