Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis says Donald Trump’s recent statements on the abortion issue show the former president’s “values” are out of step with Iowa GOP voters. Trump said during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the six week abortion ban DeSantis signed into law this spring was a terrible mistake.
“Donald Trump may think it’s terrible. I think protecting babies with heartbeats is noble and just and I’m proud to have signed the heartbeat bill in Florida and I know Iowa has similar legislation,” DeSantis says. “I don’t know how you can even make the claim that you’re somehow prolife if you’re criticizing states for enacting protections for babies that have heartbeats.”
DeSantis made his comments during an interview with Radio Iowa. (Audio below)
DeSantis suggested Trump’s remarks are :a window” into how Trump’s 2024 campaign is diverting from the promises he made during the 2016 campaign. “And I think he’s changing in a way that is not consistent with the values of the people in Iowa,” DeSantis told Radio Iowa.
Trump also indicated during his “Meet the Press” interview that he’d negotiate a deal on abortion that’s acceptable to both sides. DeSantis said that’s “the danger” of returning Trump to the White House for a second term.
“I’ve given him credit for his accomplishments, whether it’s the court appointments, whether it’s the Abraham Accords…the deregulation and I think he does deserve credit for that, but anytime he did a deal with Democrats whether it was on budget, whether it was on the criminal justice ‘First Step Act,’ they ended up taking him to the cleaners,” DeSantis said. “I think if he’s going into this saying he’s going to make the Democrats happy with respect to right to life, I think all pro-lifers should know that he’s preparing to sell you out.”
Current Florida law bans most abortions after the 15th week of a pregnancy, but a court ruling this fall could let the six week abortion ban DeSantis signed this spring go into effect. Activists in Florida, on both sides of the abortion issue are now gathering petition signatures, hoping to amend Florida’s state constitution so it reflects their views.
“Clearly, we’ll make the positive case for what we did as something that is appropriate and based on science and based on what is just,” DeSantis said.
A University of North Florida poll conducted in March found 75% of Florida residents surveyed either somewhat or strongly oppose the six week abortion ban DeSantis signed into law in April. “As a leader, it doesn’t register to me, to be quite frank,” DeSantis said regarding polling data on abortion. “I mean I think there are issues that come from your beliefs and I think that you advance those because you think they’re right.”

First, it makes abortion a federal issue AGAIN.
Second, it means that any future congress can change the agreement
“First, it makes abortion a federal issue AGAIN.”
You must be unaware that Federal judges have already jumped in on states passing anti-abortion laws AGAIN!!!.
A perfect, legitimate response from DeSantis would be this is what Florida chose to do --- let other states decide for themselves.
I can't understand why RDS is hellbent on re-federalizing the abortion issue, securing Republican defeat and insuring abortion on demand again becomes the law of the land.
The Deep State was never more powerful than when Trump was POTUS. Trump has shown very little interest in “leading a counter-revolution” as seen recently in his endorsement of Ronna McRomney to lead the GOP. We can project onto Trump what we want him to be but that does not make him so, unfortunately.
“Reagan defeated communism.”
Reagan did not defeat communism. The communist simply blended in with the Rats and multiplied, taking over most schools and most of the Federal work force.
Yes but that does not mean what you think it does. Jumping to conclusions for whatever reason is counterproductive. I outlined what Trump hopes to achieve. Bills would need to be passed and there need to be Dems on board to get them passed. What disgusting morally bankrupt people would let a live born infant die in a closet without water or nourishment. The left have refused to pass any such bill. Obama refused to vote yes on just such a bill.
Dana Loesch was spot-on yesterday re Trump and his pathetic handling of his interrogator where he made these awful remarks.
Very disappointed that he handed his enemies ammunition and made himself appear vulnerable.

Hmm, not sure exactly what Trump is propsing here. If he is for a 15 week federal ban, how would that interfer with states that have a stricter ban? It wouldn’t neceserily. It certainly would stop some abortions in states where there is a ban, such as NY. Need more details.
The question is that while abortion is a state issue the other issues such as abandoning babies born alive and killing them at birth as not as clear.
People think they know what is in Trump’s mind. He may not want to pass a federal law at all he may want to hammer out a position consensus in a national conversation about what the minimal standards of respecting life would entail. The Trump haters and closet leftists/globalists want to use this issue to divide the American people so they are gaslighting an emotional worst case. The want to use this issue like a club to destroy our Country.
It is back to the States now. Until we see a massive change of heart across the country, we will never get a national bill passed.
DeSantis isn’t going to get anything like this passed or on the table primarily because his backers and the GOPe don’t want it.
DeSantis is just throwing out crap hoping it will stick.
When Trump feels threatened, he’ll attack Republicans from the left.
From July till September, Erik disappears. Then Erik returns being the same ole Erik he always was. Are you planning on voting for Trump or for communism?
Trump:
“Because Democrats don’t want to be radical on the issue; most of them, some do,” he continued. “They don’t want to be radical on the issue. They don’t want to kill a baby in the seventh month or the ninth month or after birth. And they’re allowed to do that, and you can’t do that.”
Doesnt sound like thats Trumps opinion.
Or if he sees an opportunity to play the middle... he will take it.
Bushie says what?
Trump got us SC justices that overturned RvW, and was the only president to attend the RTL rally.
If you prefer talk over results, go ahead support someone else.
Me, though, I’m sick of losing.
Is Trump talking in terms of a federal ban, and what the length should be? Or is he just commenting on one state?
I haven’t seen any Bush say anything whatsoever recently, have you?
First, it is a little creepy that you keep track of me like this. Sorry, I'm not available to be your date for Trump's next LGBTQ party.
Second, you were one of those calling me a liar that Trump wanted to protect abortion. Now he made is clear. He will negotiate his own achievement away in return for being liked.
He will do the same on assault weapons.
I cannot support such a candidate in the primary.
So communism it is. You’re not going to like your new masters Erik. They won’t like you much either.
