A local Panera has done the same thing. They used to have cups out for coffee and cold drinks. No more. If you want a drink, you have to pay first to get a cup. People were just helping themselves. Of course, there will still be people who bring their own cups and fill up.........

I went this week. No person to take orders. Kiosk only. I walked out. Probably never to return.

Labor is expensive. If you want someone to take your order, use the drive thru.

I’m surprised the entry doors weren’t locked with a note saying “drive through” only. So many joints like that rarely open their dining rooms anymore in my area since the Covid shutdowns.

I’m the same way. I go to breakfast or lunch sometimes with a couple of retired buddies, but we go to a full serve breakfast place and pig out. We talk, but when we’re done eating we all skedaddle, no sitting there for an hour and then getting pie. Although I really like pie. 😝

Dang! Thanks for the heads up. Thats going increase prices dramatically! Might even put some locations out of business.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Most fast food workers in California would get a $20 minimum wage next year — a nearly $5 per hour raise — under a deal announced Monday between labor unions and the industry that will avoid a costly referendum on the November 2024 ballot.

The mandatory raise would apply to all fast food restaurants in California that are part of a chain with at least 60 locations nationwide. It does not apply to restaurants that operate a bakery and sell bread as a stand-alone menu item, such as Panera Bread. The $20 wage would start April 1 and a council would have the power to raise it each year through 2029.

In the next five years, they're going to start to tear them down so you'll only be able to use it for drive thru. Or maybe use the kiosk and pick up your food to go. You won't be interacting with a human anymore.

You go to Chili's for that.

I don’t even waste my time going to fast food places anymore. They’re all overpriced, filthy, and manned by a few surly youths.

This is going to save a lot of lives. No more knife and gun fights between customers and employees at the Coke dispenser. Now if they could do something about the drive-thrus. Probably the most dangerous place to work in America.

My favorite fast food is Chick fil A. They don’t have self serve fountain drinks and it’s always busy and crowded. No big deal.

In the early ‘70s, when McDonald’s only had Coke, orange, and root beer, I used to like swamp water, which was half orange and half root beer.

There were no self-serve drinks, and no free refills (unless you worked there).

McDonald’s should put RFDs or bar codes on the cups for the vending machine to scan.

The free refills would expire after an hour.

I haven’t been to a McDonald’s in years. I drink a lot of diet coke while eating so getting rid of the unlimited soda fountain pretty much eliminates any chance I’ll ever set foot in one again. The idea that you can get the one person working the counter to refill your drink is laughable when you’ll have to wait 10 minutes to get their attention, most people will give up and go away before doing that. That’s what they’re counting on. I’d have more respect for them if they just said “NO REFILLS”, at least then you know what you’re dealing with.

In-N-Out still has the refill stations but a lot of restaurants are phasing these out.

I had a budweiser with a burger at a Burger King or Carl’s Jr once. I was in Southern California at the time, and this was 40 years ago. I think I got the beer just for the novelty of getting it at a fast food place.

Bring back the 2000 degree fried apple pies!

I still have tissue damage from the last one I ate, but oh man it was so worth it.

Napalm with a bubbly crust! Cooked them when I worked at Mickey D’s in the paperhat and barber shirt days.

The iPhone app is even better than through kiosk once you learn how to use it. There’s also deals like a $1 BF sandwich (now$1.50) or BOGO double cheeseburger or 99 cent coffee.

We used to go a lot pre-COVID. The best deal was a free chicken sandwich with $1 purchase, which at the time was a cheeseburger. The app seems to have some “intelligence” to customize deals. My wife gets 99 cent coffee, but I don’t. She also gets BOGO DCB, while I get BOGO + 29 cents. I’ll be creating a new account soon to see what happens.

On an partially related note, I just won 6-months of a daily free large 1-topping pizza at our local Marco’s.
