When Mexican presidential contenders Claudia Sheinbaum and Xochitl Galvez entered politics at the start of the millennium, more than four in five senators in the country were men. Today, the majority are women.
The rise of Sheinbaum, who was named on Wednesday as the ruling party’s candidate for next year’s presidential election, and Galvez, the main opposition contender, is the culmination of a rapid process of female inclusion in politics since 2000.
“It’s extraordinary in a patriarchal country,” said Josefina Vazquez Mota, who made history in 2012 as the first female presidential candidate for one of Mexico’s main parties. “I’m sure this is going to be a watershed,” added Vazquez Mota, a senator who, like Galvez, represents the center-right National Action Party, or PAN, which ruled from 2000-2012.
maybe she has the balls to clean up mexco... or not
Maybe she will call for and welcome all Mexicans in the US to return home and help build a new Mexico. Good riddance, maybe we help them leave.
So dominion voting machines are used in mehico, too?
Check the last name...
Sadly, the “Conservative” PAN party’s policy is to dump what’s left of Mexico’s underclass on the U.S., and then call us racist when we don’t want to take them. See Vicente Fox.
Women shouldn’t govern.
Women shouldn’t govern.
That would be another mistake in a long line of mistakes they’ve made.
Margaret Thatcher is the best example of a capable and strong female in government. The best Prime Minister of the UK since Churchill.
When PAN ran Josefina, a very conservative Catholic woman, she bombed. Sheinbaum, the Morena party candidate, is a Marxist. So of course she’s going to get great press.
Well said.
New twist to Mexican Political Whores.
If Sheinbaum is elected will Bret Stephens finally go back?
AMLO is the first ball-less President of Mexico. Doesn’t that make him the first female President of Mexico?
Yeah because men have been doing such a wonderful job. 🙄 Less than a quarter of elected officials are females. The other three quarters are males. Given that they overwhelmingly run the show & are the vast majority of government officials, it seems only fair to give the majority a majority of the criticism. If you are unhappy with the current state of American law, it was mainly men that wrote it. If you don’t feel you have adequate representation, it was mainly men representing you. If you don’t feel your values have been spoken about enough, it was mainly men doing the talking.
My point here isn’t to say that I blame either gender, it’s that I don’t think gender is a determinant for good governance, I think it’s the individual person & their commitment to a limited government & constitutional governing philosophy, traditional moral standards & a generally free-market economic stance. I will grant you some truths: the general population of women are slightly more willing to vote for Democrats than the general population of men (there is a gender gap usually of 5 points between the 2). I’ll also concede that there is a limited segment of women that are too emotional & irrational to truly do a go job in selecting government representatives. No doubt about that! But you’d have a hard time arguing that overemotionalism hasn’t affected a sizable portion of men as well in recent decades & that the percentage of men willing to vote Democrat is pretty ainfuriating in its own right.
I dont have a problem with flippant remarks about banning women’s votes- my husband says stuff all the time. And believe me, in the instances that I see a majority of women vote for the non-conservative, it makes me mad as hell & debate possibly banning womens votes. What I object to is the half serious ‘make me a sammitch’ attitude & the not so subtle sport of blaming women for the state of the country, politics, culture, everything. That’s a convenient excuse to avoid talking about all of the reasons we find our country in such an awful state. It doesn’t help!
I’m about as staunch a conservative as you wol be able to find- on all issues. My emotional temperament is conservative and stoic as well. I’m no Powder puff! I’m a harass. I read comments like yours and I still come here because conservatism is more important to me than anything a person could say. But, I do wonder how many women that read your comments & avoid coming back because they don’t want to endure being put down or insulted. The truth is we need every vote we can possibly get in order to win upcoming election. Could you please put your Neanderthalism on hold- at least until we win the election! 😉
Just when we thought they couldn’t get any worse...
If she's honest and believes the police or armed forces will protect her, she's not going to do anything but be a martyr.
If she's compromised with "plata o plomo" she'll do whatever her boss says.
If she's a cold hearted, killer that loves her country and is willing to "make the sausage".... well, we'll see blood on the streets.....and become a martyr.
As for "balls".. the mexican press has more ball that anyone on this side of the border and some of the politicos are actually willing to die for their cause..... and have.
Anyone that is stupid enough to enter that snake pit, which is an ongoing civil war, is a fool and has no idea what "going to war against cartels" even means. The senators, congressmen and politicos that yap about going "to war" against the "cartel" better realize that there is a lot of brown skin mowing their lawns, repairing their cars, filling up their yachts with fuel, building their houses, cleaning their houses and making their food....
When the targets of the cartel AND THEIR FAMILIES (federal/state and local cops, soldiers, journalists, politicians, bankers, lawyers, businessmen) end up hanging from an overpass or all laying on their front lawn holding their heads...... well fellas, welcome to the way the cartels "make war".
and they'll be right across the border or the other side of your town... not 5-6,000 miles away in a mountain or in a pile of sand.
Ask the african americans that used to live in Compton why the police couldn't or wouldn't protect them and how Compton is little Tijuana
Tragic
No-liberals-male or female-should not govern in a republic/free country-they are too prone to embrace communist ideals. And since you are saying I should be denied my constitutional right to vote because I’m female-let’s talk about removing yours instead-just because you are male, and since men are have been in the majority of congressional/senatorial positions, and exclusively in the position of CIC, they are mostly responsible for the slide of the country toward a socialist/communist government over the last 50+ years-so they shouldn’t govern-see how that works?
You really should not to make statements/remarks like that on a site where the women are conservative-it isn’t nice to insult our intelligence and abilities as the equals we are...
