WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - A former chairman of the right-wing Proud Boys group was sentenced on Tuesday to 22 years in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump trying to overturn the former president's election defeat.
Enrique Tarrio was convicted of charges, including seditious conspiracy, for his role in planning the storming of the Capitol, when thousands of supporters of the Republican then-U.S. president violently tried to stop Congress from certifying the results of an election that Trump falsely claimed had widespread fraud.
Federal prosecutors had asked U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly to impose a 33-year prison sentence on Tarrio, who was not present at the Capitol on the day of the violence because another judge had ordered him to stay out of Washington. Prosecutors said he helped direct the attack from Baltimore.
Tarrio's attorneys had asked for a substantially shorter sentence.
Kelly last week sentenced another far-right Proud Boys leader, Ethan Nordean, to 18 years, less than the 27 years prosecutors had sought. Oath Keepers militia founder Stewart Rhodes in May was also sentenced to 18 years. Nordean and Rhodes had previously been tied for the longest sentence handed down in the case.
More than 1,100 people have been arrested on charges related to the Capitol assault, and of those at least 630 have pleaded guilty and at least 110 have been convicted at trial. Five people, including a police officer, died during or shortly after the riot and more than 140 police officers were injured. The Capitol suffered millions of dollars in damage.

Here’s what I do know. The reason Trump was able to get his SCOTUS nominees through was because of McConnell’s blocking of Garland. So what we’ve settled here tonight is that Trump is just another tool of the status quo. He’s no rebel. He’s no outsider. He’s a former POTUS who is running for the office yet again and he’s the de facto leader of one of the two major American political parties. Trump is a politician. The same as all the ones you claim to hate. He’s a swamp monster just like all the rest of them. Enjoy your worship of the swamp.

Did you think it was a coincidence that neither Kanye West or the Green Party candidate were on the ballot in the crucial states in 2020?
Did you think it was a coincidence that Democrat lawyers moved emergency COVID voting rules through the courts and/or the executive, bypassing the legislature last time?
And did you expect the people name-called by Trump were going to support him? (Some did, putting the country ahead of being insulted. But, some didn’t.) As a consequence, Trump ran behind the national popular vote for GOP congressional candidates.
PS the Democrats are trying to keep No Labels and the Green Party off the ballot next year. If you’re in AK, AZ or NV, where there are petition drives underway, you should consider signing the Green Party petition.

It will go on for the next 20 years while the Dems makes solid gains (and knock out these people in the General like they did in 2022), but they will scream “Stolen!” with no evidence each time, as they fail to expand their base from GOP primary fringe base, to the rest of the country, right, center and center left (indies, dems, GOP) which they will need to take power. It’s hopeless.
Just sickening, 22 years for trespassing.
