China's history has recurrent eras of authoritarian central rule followed by decline into warring states and renegade provinces. And, to a greater degree than is commonly realized, China today still has strong regional dialects and cultural loyalties.

For the CCP, China's fractious history and current divisions are part of why Taiwan is such an issue. The CCP believes that all Chinese must bow to central authority lest any renegade group attract enough support to set off another catastrophic cycle of political instability and division.

Do you know much about China? They do not see themselves as just Chinese. There is a caste/ethic strife internally.
