“Berry College in my town has 26,000 ac. and lots of deer. They’re welcomed, but I think there’s a hunting season too.”
Georgia has a large deer population. We have about 20 to 30 that hang out at our place. Yesterday, there were two on our patio eating the cat’s food. We need more hunters to reduce the deer population a bit.
I sure wouldn’t want deer hanging out at my house. I’ve never heard of such here in NW GA. Doesn’t seem very “sporting” to shoot any “non-dangerous” animal just passing through. Animal Control serves a worthy purpose.
If your game warden finds out, he'll cite you for baiting.
The neighboring town opened up a public dialogue on how to control the exploding deer population. WRONG approach!! It was a year-long debate that seemed to be half in favor of “Leave Bambi Alone!” and half wanting to thin the herd WAY down. Signs sprang up all over town saying “No hunting here!”
Our town took the lesson and quietly culls the herd away from public scrutiny. Nobody knows where the deer went to. A neighbor on city council gave me strong hints, but he won’t spell it out (smart guy). I keep my lip zipped on that topic. We used to have 25-30 hanging around our place, mainly because two nearby do-gooder neighbors thought they needed feeding in the winter. Now we have a couple of does, a buck now and then, and a couple of fawns.
My garden has never looked better!
