It’s a scab that will never heal as long as it is picked. Soon it develops into a scar, and we are long past that. Every once in a while it undergoes an infection.
Frankly, I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that. Except never before in my 70 year memory have there been more folks interested in re-opening the wound.
