That’s so cool! I’m so glad you got to do that!

My great-grandfather was an engineer for the Nashvile, Chattanooga & St. Louis during the Great Depression and WWII. So many family stories about his time doing that.

During the Depression, everyone in our extended family would save up their pennies and the funny papers sections of their newspapers all year and at Christmas my great-grandfather would toss bundles of fruit and candy wrapped in funny papers to the desperately poor children of Appalachia. It was pretty much all those kids got for Christmas. He had a white beard and the kids thought he was Santa Claus. My mother got to ride in the engine with him and help toss out the goodies as a child.

Now Nashville Steam is in the process of restoring his old engine 576 and I hope I can realize my dream of riding on his train.
