LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Eyewitnesses are describing an apocalyptic scene in Lahaina town, where residents were forced to jump into the harbor waters to avoid fast-moving flames from a massive brush fire that’s destroyed much of the historic area and continues to burn.
Residents say an overwhelmed fire force — fighting flames all day amid powerful winds — could do little as flames ripped through historic Lahaina town, destroying dozens of homes and businesses in what onlookers believe is the worst natural disaster in Hawaii’s history since Hurricane Iniki.

Large out of control fire on the NW side of Maui. Reports of many homes and business destroyed in Lahaina. Reports of people running into ocean to escape the fire. The US coast guard has been rescuing people

Very bad situation. Reports indicate 80mph winds from distant Hurricane Dora are fanning the flames.
But the centipede he crawls all over your feet...
I read the entire story and didn’t see what caused the fire.
Was it lightning, lava or something else?
Such a shame.Hope everyone is safe.
I googled it and read several other articles. None of them has any more information about what caused the various fires. One mentioned that they don’t know what caused a small upland fire, while the acting governor’s statement puts the wind as the cause of the fires, which can’t be precisely accurate.
Bummer. Lahaina always had a great Halloween party.
James Michener was there-holed up for 6 weeks when he wrote “Hawaii”.
Oh you know what they're blaming it on.
Wife and I stayed in a condo on Maalea Bay about 18 years ago, the central part of Maui on the west side. The wind blew very hard all the time with no storm anywhere near. You could hardly hold onto the car door when you opened it, and the cars all had dings on the sides from car doors getting away from people when they stepped out of the car. Wind surfing on the bay was a big thing, with the wind blowing non-stop all day.
It was long ago, but there were a good bit of debris on the road up to Lahaina, a few old stoves and refrigerators sitting out in grass on the sides of the road. Not a lot of development in the area from the mid-island up to Lahaina. It was late October and not overly crowded.
Gee, that’s the same amount of time it took me to read it!
The hospitals on the island of Maui are overwhelmed with burn patients and people suffering from smoke inhalation, Hawaii’s Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke told CNN, adding that caring for those injured in the wildfires has been hampered by the difficulty of transporting patients to other facilities,
Tragic...and that’s not the only place on fire in Maui
The trade winds are almost constant up in Kapalua north of Lahaina.
The best place to stay on Maui(IMHO)is Wailea or Makena.
I remember great bike tours from the volcano through town at sunrise great trip. It will be a great loss such a great town.
Any FRiends from HI with us today? I don’t remember hearing occasions of major wildfires there in the past. Are they common? Are there water drop planes and helicopters readily available as we have here in CA and throughout the West?
In Maui, at least when I was there in the 90’s, they harvest the sugar by burning the cane fields. Then they collect the charred stalks and pile them up on trucks. Sometimes the roads are closed due to smoke. I wonder if one of those cane fires got out of control. This is Tragic. I love Lahaina. It is a beautiful town.
