Stockton 7-11 clerks went too far in viciously beating brazen shoplifter | Opinion

Store clerks have legal options when someone shoplifts. Teaming up to brutally beat the thief isn’t one of them. No wonder two 7-11 clerks in Stockton who battered a would-be shoplifter with a wooden rod are being investigated by police, as reported on TV news. Although brazen stealing is frustrating, costly and dangerous to store employees, confronting it with violence that far exceeds self-defense is not the answer.

The Modesto Bee editorial board sounds out of tune.
They need a good tune-up.

I liked listening to the black cashier during the filming, telling the other employees “There’s nothing you can do, let him go...” Talk about black solidarity.
I am glad the Sikhs did not listen and use their stick liberally and with force.

The thief reached and started to pull something from his right rear pocket.
It could have been a gun. It's on video.

When every second counts, the police are minutes away. I hope this story gets national attention.

There are problems with this encounter. And maybe the local politicians are right. The store owners were wrong to beat the shoplifter. I know it is easy to espouse after the fact and all of that. But, if the store owners had used a shotgun it would have TOTALLY eliminated repeat crimes.

Let the members of the editorial board writing this article find such a thief inside their home robbing them of security of their persons and posessions......
"They have insurance", right?

im hoping the jury gives them a standing ovation They won't.
They'll listen to what the kangaroo court prosecutor, the kangaroo "judge", their IPhones and their TeeVees tell them to do.
In the interests of "American Jesters"...

It’s funny this op-ed gets posted on the anniversary of Hiroshima. Think about it. Like the employees getting the upper hand the US had the war won. The bomb was the exclamation point just like the 30+ whacks.
Just like the second guessers on the use of the bomb those that stand in judgement were not there and were not affected. Hindsight will always be 20-20.

TPTB routinely investigate situations like this. They inherently object to any commoner who in their minds challenge the monopoly on use of force that they claim as their exclusive right.
Well the barn door is open and the horse has escaped. Too little to late. People only accept the enforced anarchy so long. The exclusive right to use force is long gone. Welcome to Thunderdome.

I would not have minded if they had gone a bit further. Anyone who watched the video could see the thug thought he was entitled to everything the store owner possessed. Including possibly his life. He kept reaching for his back pocket and I thought at one point I saw a gun. He told him he had one so the clerks had reason to fear for their lives.
